A part time job is just what it says it is and is taken for many reasons. Teenagers getting their first jobs usually get a job with part time hours. This is due to having to work around school hours and various other activities. Most places will not allow a teen to work full time hours, either. So they typically get a fast food job or one at a retail shop in the mall. There are also jobs like this available at department stores and grocery stores. Experience gained with these jobs are invaluable when it comes to preparing a résumé.

Other reasons that people may take a part time job is when someone needs an extra job besides his or her full time job. This has been a bit of an income boost for years when someone needs it. With the economy in its current condition, it is just not possible for people to live on minimum wage jobs. Therefore, it is not unusual at all for people to have more than one job. Some people even have as many as three jobs with two of them being part time and one full time. This is not healthy, of course, but in some locations it is necessary in order to survive.

People who are on such government plans as disability or are receiving money from the government due to being a certain age may not be allowed to earn more than a specific amount of money or they will lose their government checks. These people will get a part time job just to supplement their income and make it possible for themselves to live. Many corporations will specifically hire older people to work part time hours just so they can make use of their talents and abilities that are otherwise going to waste.

It is not unheard of for people to work part time jobs in order to save money for special occasions such as a birthday, anniversary, or even the holidays. When a job is taken in this manner it is never meant to become anything more than it is: A means to an end. In fact, it is one of the top three reasons that people seek out a part time job. This one is typically given up once the reason for working it has been taken care of. For example, the money for the anniversary present is made. Therefore, the job is no longer needed.

Whatever your personal reason for thinking of part time jobs, they usually turn out to be quite handy when you need them.
